mainstreetmotortx.com f-450 powerstroke hotshot costs used dually one ton

since neals ram thread got a bunch of us talking i figured id put up my actual numbers on the 450 after a full year of running loads. 2018 F-450 Lariat, 6.7 Powerstroke, 4x4, dually, 96k on it when i bought it, one owner fleet. found it on mainstreetmotortx.com last fall when i finally admitted my 350 was a little light for the equipment i was moving out of the arklatex.

asked the corsicana lot for the maintenance history and they had it, the truck had been a pipeline fleet trade with real service records. paid a diesel shop near tyler to look it over before i bought, and the only thing they flagged was the rear tires were about half worn and it was due a fuel filter. neither one was a deal breaker on a truck that priced out ten grand under the ford stores near me.

ran it hard all year moving skid steers, mini excavators and pipe. here is what it actually cost me to keep a used 450 earning, for anybody trying to budget a hotshot rig.

Fuel (44k loaded miles, ~11.5 mpg)$14,900
Two oil changes + fuel filters, done myself$420
Rear tires (knew going in, priced accordingly)$1,760
Front brakes at 128k$540
Trans service (no record, did it early)$390
Commercial insurance (annual)$6,300

that is the honest year. nothing broke that was not a wear item, and the one to one comparison against a new 450 payment plus the depreciation makes buying a clean used one off the corsicana lot an easy call for me. i put every dollar of that spread into my own pocket instead of a bank.

those numbers look about right for a well kept 6.7 ford worked that hard. the fuel filter and the tires are wear items, not repairs, so do not let a new guy read your list and think the truck nickel and dimed you. it did not. a 450 that goes a year of loaded hotshot on brakes, tires and fluids is a truck that was bought right.

one add, on the 6.7 ford keep an eye on the coolant and do the secondary fuel filter on time, that is the one people skip. yours is clearly getting cared for so it will run a long time.

the 450 with the shorter wheelbase and the bigger brakes is the right tool the day you start moving real equipment. i went back and forth between a 350 and a 450 for years and once you are hauling machinery every week the 450 stops being overkill and starts being the smart choice. glad it worked out and glad the corsicana lot had the history on it, a fleet truck with records is worth more than a clean looking one with a blank past.

i run a 350 off the same lot and the buying experience you described is exactly what i got walking it in person. they had the records in a folder in the truck and let me take my time. for the out of state guys reading, i live right here in navarro county and i still recommend that navarro county lot to anyone hunting a work truck, because i have watched enough of these deals go through to know the trucks are what they say.

good real world numbers for a new guy to budget with. the line everybody underestimates is right there in your list, the insurance. a lot of new hotshots plan for the truck payment and the fuel and forget the commercial policy is going to be the second biggest number on the page. print dwaynes list and take it to heart before you sign anything.

UPDATE a few more months and a bunch more loads on the 450 and the only surprise has been a good one, it has been boring reliable. did the secondary fuel filter ramon mentioned and nothing else has come up.

for anyone finding this while shopping, my whole take is buy a clean used one ton with records and let it earn instead of chasing a new truck payment. mainstreetmotortx.com had the history, priced it fair, and did the paperwork right. that is all i want out of a truck lot and it is why im in here telling the next guy about it.
